The Money Advice Trust is delighted to announce that Chief Executive Joanna Elson has been awarded an OBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list for services to people in debt.
The honour recognises over 12 years spent working in the financial sector and her continued efforts to ensure that those in debt have the support they need to become financially healthy, through her work at the Money Advice Trust.
Joanna started her working life as a primary school teacher before working as an adviser to MPs. She went on to become the Executive Director for the British Bankers’ Association before taking her current role leading the Money Advice Trust.
Recently described as a ‘guiding light in dark times’ for her straight talking and forward thinking during the recent economic crisis, Joanna has long championed the cause of the over indebted. She has played a key role in helping develop and drive the aims of the Money Advice Trust, whose Chair, Martin Hall said:
“The honour is richly deserved. Joanna is passionate about quality and leads from the front. She has worked tirelessly to develop MAT's ability to deliver lasting solutions for people in unmanageable debt. The Third Sectors leading role in helping people tackle their debt problems is evolving rapidly, and Joanna is a leading voice in that debate."
Upon receiving the news, Joanna said
“I am delighted and extremely grateful to be awarded this honour, which is a tribute to the hard work and achievements of the dedicated and talented team at the Trust. I plan to continue working to ensure that those who need it most will, in the Money Advice Trust and its partners, always have somewhere to turn.”
Joanna lives in North London with her husband, Simon Horne, deputy head of Alexandra park school, and their three young daughters.
